Exceeded number of packages APT is capable of error ?

cydia ios apt error repos
Oh Hi There!

Wow, you exceeded the number of package names this APT is capable of.

Today we're going to explain this error because it's very alarming for the novice user.

APT is the name of the package management system used on jailbroken iPhones. Cydia itself is a front-end GUI for the APT Package Manager and the version of APT used can only handle up to 65K packages, yes 65,000 packages (source: Brittag, saurikIT) the default repositories add up to 41K, that's 41,000 packages already used up out of the box when you jailbreak. This is perfectly fine, you now have room for an additional 24,000 packages which is quite a few, once you add the insanelyi repo of 7400 packages and growing, this number reduces down to 16,600, but you get the point. The only way to exceed the maximum packages APT is capable you'd have to also add the some of the other largest additional repositories, X,ihacks, biteyourapple, hackyouriphone etc, which is completely pointless since these repositories host 90% of the same content, why do you need 5 of them ? More is not better, all this does is slow down Cydia for you, causes more errors and gives you a poor Cydia experience. I'm sorry, but your not missing out by not adding all these repositories, at insanelyi we try to cover almost everything you would ever want. From deep down in my heart I ask you to please choose 1-2 additional repositories you like and stick with them, smaller additional repositories are fine, reptrich etc, but keep is mind the more you have, the slower Cydia will be.

I really hope this article covers everything, if not please let us know in the comments below, also any questions will be answered in the comments below or you can create a thread on our support forums http://insanelyi.com if you need help with a different Cydia or Repo error you can check out our large thread on them here

how do i fix this? i also had that one? do i need to do some resetting?

Remove some additional repositories.

Thanks for this info...

The only thing having them all does in my experience is it gives you more options to find the latest version of the app you want. It's like which repo can release it faster or something.

Other than that I can't think of a good reason to have that many.

I only have 4 repos & this just occured after uninstalling a .deb file that I installed using iFile. Now, my cydia is empty, the manage, package & the sources has no content.

It doesn't matter how many repos, what matters is the repos you have added adds up to more than 65,000 packages, so if you add our repo which has almost 8000 packages now + the default repos which I'm sure is beyond 41,000 now. could be around 50,000+ this only leaves you about 15,000 left or less so if you add two more big repos which host the same content as insanelyi then you'll tap out easy.

I should also add if you have that huge perl repo then it would easily tap out.

Alrighty, thanks sull.

Ok so when I go into cydia and receive the error message, then return to cydia, there are no packages or sources to view everything is blank! Any idea what I should do?

Until you remove some repos until you are under the maximum allowed packages Cydia will appear blank.

You can also clear your package cache from /var/lib/apt/lists/ all except partical folder and lock file. Cydia will then re download all package lists. But remember if you have a bunch of repos added you'll run into the same issue again.

Awesome thanks for the speedie reply that want I was looking for a file path :) thanks again

Whos Twitter

Davie bounce's in chanting a football like chant :

"I only got 1 repo , just one repo , who needs the rest , i got the best , insanelyi passes the test"

well, i got it now .. just need to delete some old app and themes from other repos that doesn't works .. thanks

thanks for the clarification boss... I am having this problem too, going to wipeout all other repo..... bigboss+insanelyi+biteyourapple will be enough I think... Thanks again..

I have like 10 repos, including this and BiteYourApple, each of them are very big.... But I don't have error, and I'm on Cydia 1.0.9 or the one before the new "iOS 7" Cydia update, is this a prob?
